Cougar Fans...It's Time

Anyone who knows me well knows that I am a HUGE BYU Basketball fan. This is quite apparent from my facebook page, as about 85% of my updates in the winter have something to do with it. But this may surprise some of you. You might think that I am a bigger BYU Football fan than Basketball fan. While I do quite enjoy cheering on my Cougars during the football season, there is a special place in my heart for the basketball team. As a fan, I think the experience is just better. You can sit right up close to the action without having to pay hundreds of dollars. Close enough that you can see the players' emotion on their faces, hear them yell words of encouragement to each other or give each other a high five. There are only 13 or so guys on a team. You feel like you get to know each one as you watch them play - both offense and defense. You cheer when they score. You groan when they come up short. You celebrate when they win. And you feel their disappointment and determination when they lose. I don't know - there's just something about this game that I love more than any other.

And while I've always been a fan over the years, to me this team has something special about it. These guys are a team. You can see it in the way they interact with each other. The way they support and encourage each other. And in how they perform on the court. They just click. And as a fan, it is so fun to watch! I love watching these boys perform. It makes me happy. It's fun. And it gives me something to look forward to each week during these long Utah winter months...

So! I thought I would share a little bit of our love for the 2009-2010 BYU Men's Basketball Team...

Yes, we do wear our cougar hats to the basketball games...

And we wait in long lines to get good seats...

And we make signs...

And we go cheer on our team against their biggest rival...

My team was chosen by Nike as one of the four teams across the country to wear pink shoes and pink trim on their jerseys as part of the "Coaches v. Cancer" event. This is particularly poignant for our team, as head coach Dave Rose was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last summer, but made it through and is now a cancer survivor.

The picture is blurry, but check out those shoes! That is one bright shade of pink...but our boys made it look good!

I took a video of the awesome intro they did for this big game. While my video shows it more head one, this one is much better quality. The video is awesome. And the music in the first half of the intro is J.T. Fredette, our star player Jimmer's older brother...

While all of the games this season have been a blast to watch, the BYU-Utah game is always just a little bit more exciting. And this game was no exception. Here are the highlights...

Hopefully you took a bit of time to watch it (if you didn't see the game). Can you believe what Henderson did to Jackson Emery!?! Oh man, did that get the crowd riled up. Jackson is one of my favorite players on the team (oh who am I kidding...they are all my favorite) and I am quite protective over my players. That may sound ridiculous, but that's how I see it. You do not mess with my boys. Some of you may be thinking "If she's that protective over the players on a team that just play on the college team, what will she be like with her own kids??" I will be the exact same way. I will be at those games, cheering my heart out. But if someone touches my kid, someone better be there to hold me back...

And by the way, I am pretty determined to have at least one of my kids play on this team. Jonathan and my genetics should combine for just the right build and speed. When we do have kids, especially boys, basketballs, shorts, jerseys, shoes, etc. will be welcome. :)

Oh, and in case you wanted to see that flagrant foul by Utah on Jackson from a variety of angles, go here.

After the game we usually hang around a bit and go talk to my friend Jessica, who works event staff for the Marriott Center and is stationed at the tunnel by the visiting team's bench and the press conference room. Last night, Jimmer came out of the tunnel after his interview, passed right by us. We yelled his name and waved, and he said hi to us. It was a good night, haha.

Here are Jimmer and Jackson being interviewed after the game.

And here is Jimmer's actual interview. Man, this kid is good. He is the most underrated player in college basketball. In one game this year, he scored 49 points. And then he got mono. A lot of people thought our team would have a hard time winning games without him. But not true. Many players stepped up and made plays, and we won all of our games without Jimmer. So even though he is amazing, the rest of our team is incredible as well. But at the same time, Jimmer is a leader, and he leads this team so well. Last night, he scored 36 points. He's been compared to Danny Ainge...but I think he might be better. He's breaking Danny's records (Ex: The most any BYU basketball player had ever scored in a game against Utah was 35 points scored by Danny Ainge in the 80s. Jimmer beat that record last night with his 36). This kid can do it all. And he's only a junior.
Watch his interview last night and tell me you don't like him. I dare you.

There are still quite a few games left before March Madness begins. We are at the top of the Mountain West Conference, and should be outright champions this year. Although we've been champions for the last 3 years, we have had to share it with other teams at times. But I know we can do it this year. And at this rate, we should get a fantastic seed in the NCAA tournament, and hopefully make it farther than we've been in a long time.

Hopefully you got a sense of some of the excitement that we get to experience every week! Can't wait to see how the rest of the season turns out. Whatever the result, I'll be cheering on my team all the way.

Go Cougars!

Shoeing the Snow

I would just like to thank Jessica for the very warm, kind, caring introduction to you all. I hope I don't ruin her readership. With this most precious trust I proceed with my first blog post.

Guess what we did? I'll give you a hint...

If you don't get it the below picture will give it away.

After Jessica fell into the snow a few times we put on the snowshoes and did what Taylor does best. We walked straight up the side of the hill to get to the trail. Jessica will tell you about where we went.

We also found a snow cave pre-made and ready to go. Taylor went inside. It was pretty cool.

This is me walking on the trail.

The trail wasn't that bad but the snowshoes did help to keep you from that occasional 4 foot hole that your normal shoes sometimes find.

Below are just some fun shots with the camera....

If i look like I'm going to throw up it is because I did.

No, no I didn't but I got sick the day before and since we had been planning on this trip to hook Taylor up with an eligible lady I needed to be a good sport.

Below is a shoutout to a fellow blogger. Busybee Lauren always takes pictures of her shoes so I told Jessica to try it out.

We finally made it to the falls.

Very pretty.

This is what it looked like in 1887:

So here is the traditional group shot.

Jessica and Melanie decided it was easier to get down the mountain on their butts on the way back. :)

It was a fun date and we went home and had some lemon chicken soup which was very good and you can ask Jessica for the recipe.

Guest Blogger

The weekend has been mostly uneventful. Jonathan was sick last weekend, and of course I knew he was going to pass it on to me. He always does. And then I always get it worse. I started feeling sick on Thursday, and it got progressively worse. Saturday I stayed at home all day, worked on my brief off and on (during bouts of consciousness) and then stayed home all day today. I have taken several naps and am starting to feel somewhat better. I did manage to watch two incredibly long movies: Cranford and Gone with the Wind. (Cranford was fantastic. Really liked that one. Gone with the Wind was...interesting. At least I can say I've seen it. But that Scarlett...) I have an interview tomorrow morning with a law firm that I would like to do an internship with over the summer. This will be my first real interview with an attorney, and I do feel slightly intimidated. But then again, I'm offering to come work for them for free, so how bad can it be?

Speaking of law school...I got my grades on Friday. Dun dun dun...

It actually wasn't too bad. I was sick the week of finals, and although I studied as much as I could, through most of them I didn't really care how I did on them. All I cared about was going home and sleeping. Well, one way or another it worked out. I was wholeheartedly expecting to be in the bottom half of the class, and I was ready to accept that fate. But I was pleasantly surprised to find myself in the top half of the class. And my GPA is just a bit below the requirement for graduating cum laude, so that will be the new goal now. Raise my GPA .07 points. Hopefully I can do as well or better this semester.

Now! On to better things. I would like to introduce you all to my new, permanent "guest" blogger. This person can make me laugh like no other. This person takes care of me when I'm sick and makes me breakfast when I ask for it. This person dresses very sharp and always tells me that I'm beautiful. This person holds me when I'm tired and laughs off my faults. This person will spend hours watching "girl shows" with me, just so we can cuddle. This person works incredibly hard all day, both at school and work. This person will chat with me on lunchbreak and text me just to say "I miss you" or "I love you." This person asks me about my dreams and then does everything possible to make them come true. This person uses creativity and skill to build and make me beautiful things. This person has a heart of gold, and, lucky for me, it's all mine...

I'm sure you've all guessed who it is by now...My very own darling husband, Jonathan.

Apparently not enough people read his blog and he needs a wider audience to share his ideas and creativity with. And in an effort to give my blog a boost in the number of posts it gets, he will be posting once in a while. Or when I'm feeling lazy. That way when he asks me, "Hey, have you blogged about _______ yet?" I can say, "No. Why don't you do it yourself." :) I am sure you will all find his posts inspiring, entertaining, and enlightening. It's about time he wrote on "our" blog!

The People's Seat

Good morning, Dear Readers -

We are more than halfway through with January, thank goodness. January and February are without a doubt the hardest months to get through here in Utah. The weather is cold, the sky is gray, it snows, it rains, it freezes, it slushes, and of course there are the ever-present inversions. At least I have plenty to keep me occupied and my mind off the weather...

I am almost three weeks into my second semester of law school and boy did we hit the ground running. Law school has this funny way of making you feel that, on the first or second day of class, that you've been in the same class for months already - probably because they cover so much in so little time. Although my schedule is heavier and I do have more reading to do, I find my classes more interesting than last semester. Here is my schedule for those of you who are curious:

Monday
10:00 - Structures of the Constitution
11:00 - Advocacy
1:00 - Torts
2:00 Civil Procedure

Tuesday
10:00 - Structures of the Constitution
12:00 - 5th Grade Mentoring
1:00 - Torts
2:00 - Civil Procedure
4:00 - 5:15 - Criminal Law

Wednesday
10:00 - Structures of the Constitution
11:00 - Advocacy
1:00 - Torts
2:00 - Civil Procedure

Thursday
1:00 - Torts
2:00 - Civil Procedure
4:00 - Criminal Law

Friday
9:00 - Lecture Series

As you can tell, the first three days of the week are pretty busy. It's a challenge getting the reading for all of those classes done. But Thursday and Friday aren't bad, so I try to get as much reading done ahead of time as possible. It's worked out fine so far this year. Although sometimes I get so busy and focused on things I need to get done that I forget things. Like going to class. It's only happened once so far, but it got me pretty paranoid. It was a Tuesday - I went to Civ Pro, and then went to the break room to eat my lunch and do some reading before I had to go home and get ready for mutual. Not until the next day did I realize that I had completely missed going to Criminal Law. The thought, "Hey, I need to be in class right now" had not even crossed my mind. I didn't even realize it until the next day. But don't worry. I now pay even closer attention to my calendar and have not missed a day since!

In case you're wondering, here's a brief description of my classes:

Structures of the Constitution (Professor Gedicks): Basically an indepth study of the origins of the Constitution, the principles of it, the court decisions that have interpreted the Constitution, etc. All about the Constitution. Although this class is pretty intense and deep and sometimes it's hard to understand everything we read, I am enjoying it. I've always enjoyed history, and it's a big part of this class.

Advocacy (Professors Camp/Sears): This is basically the second half of my legal research and writing class. Last semester we wrote a memo. This semester we are writing a brief for an Appellate Court. (Cases go to trial first. Afterwards, the parties can appeal to the Appellate Courts and then the Supreme Court). Most of what you see on tv and in movies is what happens in a trial. Trial Courts decide questions of fact; Appellate Courts decide questions of law. So while some trials will be argued in front of a jury, in an Appellate Court, the lawyers argue in front of a panel of judges. After I write my brief (which would normally be submitted to the court for the judge to review), I will have to give an oral argument in front of a panel of 'judges' against one of my classmates. Normally this would terrify me, but I actually think it might be kind of fun.

Torts (Professor Augustine-Adams): Basically we study harm done to people or their property, and the action they can take in civil court. So far we have covered intentional torts - battery, assault, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and trespass to property. Later we will study negligence, damage, failure to act, products liability, etc. This class is actually really fun. Lots of hypotheticals, lots of laughter, lots of tough questions. And the reading is usually pretty short. Can't complain about that.

Civil Procedure (Professor Tarkington): This class covers the rules of civil court proceedings. The best word to describe it is complicated. There are ton of rules to follow. We study the rules, their history and evolution. I will predict right now that this will be my hardest final. So far I think I'm following well enough. It just takes a lot of concentration and effort to understand the cases and what my professor wants us to learn from them.

Criminal Law (Judge Kimball): Out of all of my classes, this one might be my favorite. I just find it fascinating. The reading is interesting and thought-provoking, and my professor is incredibly experienced and knowledgeable. In addition to teaching our class twice a week, he is a federal district judge for Utah, and is currently the judge of the Elizabeth Smart trial. (He has only talked a bit about the case, and of course, only about what has already been reported in the press. He did tell us that he will be making his decision about whether or not Brian David Mitchell is competent to stand trial within the next couple of weeks.) We've studied the principles of criminal law (ex. must prove guilty 'beyond a reasonable doubt'), the theories of punishment (fascinating), how much and what type of punishment should be given, criminal statues, voluntary and intentional acts...it's just really interesting.

So those are my main classes. If you have any questions about law school for me, just leave a comment and ask! :)

Also, I wanted to weigh in on one thing real quick. Studying the Constitution has given me an interesting perspective on the whole national health care debate. We spent the last week talking about 'sovereignty' - are the states sovereign? Is the national government sovereign? Basically the conclusion is that, under our Constitution, the people are sovereign, and give up part of their sovereignty to the states and the federal government. So what does this have to do with the health care debate? A lot. But the big news this week was Scott Brown's victory in Massachusetts. If I knew nothing else about him, this would have made me cheer for him:

Asked in a debate last week if he was willing to sit in Kennedy's seat and block health care reform, Brown replied, "With all due respect, it's not the Kennedys' seat, and it's not the Democrats' seat. It's the people's seat."

Now that guy gets it. Many people in Washington forget that their seats actually belong to the people. I love that he pointed that out. Thank you, Scott Brown. And thank you, Massachusetts.

Stay tuned for my next post, where I will introduce my new, permanent associate blogger! :)

Katie

So I have this friend. Her name is Katie. I thought about telling the story of our friendship in my own words, but I figured it would be more fun for you to hear it in her own words, as written across 20+ pages of my Eagle High School yearbook in 2003:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Huh huh huh, where to start...
Well it all began when my parents realized they were out of flour or something like that! They
were making pizzas for the president and his granny but of all the rotten luck they ran out! Don't scream - it'll be okay in the end of this tale. Anyways, they realized they could not continue the dough.
"What can we do?" my mother cried.
"We will have to ask the neighbors!" my dad said.
They went outside and went to the first house. A little old lady answered the door and, in an unfriendly tone, asked what they wanted.
"All we want is a cup of flour for pizza!"
She spat ion my dad's shoes and slammed the door in his face. He wasn't too disappointed because he got that a lot on his mission in Finland. Anyway, back to the story.
A little discouraged, they went to the next house apartment thing. A midget opened the door
and started laughing hysterically at my parents.
"What exactly do you find so funny?" they asked.
He kicked my mom in the shin and closed the door. A little depressed, they went to the next house.
A nice old man opened the door and kindly asked what he could do for them.
"We were just making pizza when we ran out of flour!" they explained.
He asked who it was for, and when they replied "The president and his granny," he got very angry!
"I hate Reagan! He & his granny can sit on a pin!"
The door was promptly slammed and my parents dejectedly left to continue their search for flour.
PAUSE. Of course you are wondering why my parents simply did not go to the store. Well, you see, it was Sunday. Okay, back to the story.
They decided to try one more house. They rang the doorbell and two nice looking people answered the door.
"Could we have some flour?"
"Why do you want flour?"
"Well we are making pizza for..."
"Pizza?! We love pizza!!!"
"Of course we'll give you some!"
My parents promptly forgot about the president and his granny and made the pizza with...drum roll please!...
THE SCHROATHS!!!!!!
That was where it all began. They decided to trade pizza for the use of a phone because my parents were too cheap to get their own phone. He he he.
Not too long after a cute kid named Rapunzel, I mean...Katie was born! That's me!
About a year later, an ogre... whoops, I spelled 'Jessica' wrong! :) was born. Katie had since moved to Texas. Yeehaw! Jessica was born in Colorado where it is always windy.
Fast forward maybe 11 years and the Hamsons visited the schroaths. They made an
astronomical discovery!
We were...I mean ARE...
RELATED!!!!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!
What are the chances! That would explain our weird tendencies and our ability to know what the other person is going to say/quote a movie line. [Bug's Life! "Co-ed" volleyball with no guys?! How rude."]
Well anyway, I'll finish the story and you can finish your teapot which should really be called a hot chocolate pot.
We moved here (Boise). I cried, but now I love it! The end!
[This part is more for me since no one else will get it...]
Okay, time for some inside jokes and memories because that story is totally over! Ok - Umm...Star Wars!!! Light Sabers!! Lord of the Rings - Sam & Gimli? "Do you want me to describe it to you or shall I get you a box?" :) Single's Ward, R.M. - "Kirby, what kind of a name is that??!!" He he. Knock Knock - Jessica's response to what are some jokes! ??? "Oh cover down cover down cover down." Our little dance where we wave our arms and look like idiots! Oh wait, every dance is like that for us (the tennis) one! Caito! and Wolverine. "Du Ananas!" (You Pineapple in German). Franzie and his milk shakes. One way streets! Dane "I'm a hound dog
Awooowoohoo!" Our lucky chant. He he he! Me giving you a bruise but getting better at serving! My head meeting the pole at Meridian. OUCH!!! Getting a black eye!!! Thank you Brett!!! Track change. Goinge to dances and making complete fools of ourselves! Swing dancing. The EFY dance. Turning off the music. Sitting on the stage and being freaked out by President Bush!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Good times, my friend. Good times.

As you may have gathered, Katie and I are crazy together. We are a lot alike. We can make each other laugh to no end. And that story is mostly true. Our parents met when they were neighbors at BYU. They came to visit us in Boise once and decided to move there. When Katie and her family moved in down the street from us, it was exactly what I needed. I needed a best friend, and Katie filled those shoes marvelously. When the school boundaries were changed, and I was supposed to move to Centennial (seemingly by myself, as most of my friends would either stay at Eagle or move to Meridian) Katie decided to switch schools her senior year so we could still go to school together. We had such a blast together in high school and then I followed Katie to BYU. Although we didn't see each other as much, it never really mattered. Our friendship just picks back up whenever we're together. I love this girl. And I am so glad she found her Prince Charming in Louis. He is an incredible guy and I can't imagine Katie with anyone less worthy.

Last Saturday, January 9th, was their wedding day. On the 7th, I threw Katie a bridal shower. Here are a few pictures.

I forgot to take a close up picture of the Jones bottles before I gave them all away. This picture is blurry since I just cropped it, but I made custom Jones bottle labels.

The Hamson girls - Katie, Kimber and Robin

Just for fun, here is a picture of Katie and I on my wedding day in August 2007.

And here we are at her wedding on January 9, 2010

Finishing touches before walking down the aisle... A new experience for both of us, as I was the Maid of Honor and also got to walk down the aisle...

Decorations outside the reception...

Their cake made by my cousin's company, One Sweet Slice. The cake topper (which is just to the left of the cake - this was before the reception so it wasn't on the cake yet) was possibly the best part.

The whole place was beautifully decorated. Amazing.

Unfortunately I did not get any photos from the actual wedding, as it was in the church. Can't wait to see the photos taken afterwards, outside the chapel. And I didn't take any at the dinner at Pizzeria 712. But it was delicious. And fun. And heartwarming. :)

And of course the reception was just a huge party, complete with dancing and crazy antics from the groomsmen.

Jonathan and I are so very happy for Katie and Louis. It was just wonderful to be a part of their special day. We can't wait to see what the future holds for them! I can predict one thing...Katie and I will finally beat Jonathan and Louis at Sorry!, once and for all...

New Years Eve

We spent the first part of New Years Eve in Orem with a family in our ward, the Hutchings. Kevin and Amanda have three little girls - Abbey, Mariah and Cali. We have babysat them before, and had a blast. We had nachos and homemade salsa for dinner, and then had snacks while we played games - Polly Pocket, Guess Who, Pirates Dice, and Sequence. The food was good, the games were fun, and the girls were adorable, as always.

Mariah making us laugh

Around 10:30 we had to head over to the church to chaperone the Multi-Stake Youth Dance. Oh man, it was like old times! But not. Things haven't changed much. They still play Enrique's "Hero." There are still the typical boys sitting in the corner with their head down, practically screaming "My mom made me come here!" And of course, the mother (who was chaperoning as well) telling her son that she would prefer if he (meaning he had to) stayed at the dance instead of going with a group of friends to a girl's house to play games. Poor kid.

Probably my favorite part of the night was reading the new year's resolutions that the kids had written and posted on a wall of the gym. They were hilarious! Things like "Flirt more", or "Declare my undying love for Megan", or "Remember to feed my dog."

We danced a bit, Jonathan said hi to some kids he knew (mostly his friends younger siblings), kissed at midnight, and that was about it!

The next day, we slept in, did some homework, and then Katie and Louis came over for dinner (they brought curry - mmm mmm) and we talked and played games. It was so fun hanging out with them, as always!

All in all, it was a nice way to bring in the new year!
